Q) Is it possible to perform ptosis correction on only one eye?

A) Hello. This is Dr. Young Moon Yoo, the representative director of VIBE Plastic Surgery, for 1-Minute Plastic Surgery.

Today’s question is, ‘Is it possible to perform ptosis correction on only one eye?’

Both eyes receive signals from the brain simultaneously to open. For example, if one eye is not opening well, the brain sends a strong signal to both eyes saying, ‘Hurry up and open your eyes.’ However, after performing ptosis correction on only that one eye, the opposite eye—which seemed fine or even appeared to open well—might suddenly start drooping. This happens because the eye that couldn’t open well can now open easily after surgery, causing the brain to significantly reduce the intensity of the signal to open the eyes. It is a bit like a seesaw, isn’t it? This is known as Hering’s Law.

Therefore, if the surgery is performed with a thorough understanding of this principle, ptosis correction on only one eye is certainly possible.
